For the Sake of Beauty

039. For The Sake Of Beauty

I’ve seen a lot of beauty in the last few days and I can’t help reflecting that if we spent more time appreciating beauty or creating it the world would simply be a better place. You can’t help but become calmer in its presence.

I’m driving across the Australian outback, from Melbourne in the south to Darwin in the north and spent today in one of the world’s great energy centres, Uluru (Ayer’s  Rock).

It is an extraordinary place which you need to experience for yourself to feel its full power.

Earlier this evening I visited the Field of Light, an installation of 50,000 lights created by Bruce Munro. It was originally inspired by Uluru and has now been installed here for the first time. Larger than 7 football pitches, all you can see in every direction is little coloured lights like stars, or desert flowers that spring up after rain and then disappear again.

It’s hard to imagine the amount of work it must have taken to create this beauty for other people to enjoy.

It makes me want to create more beauty through my own work, purely for its own sake.
